About the Cave

The Shoshone Ice Cave is about 1700 feet long, 50 feet wide, and 45 feet in height, with an elevation of about 4500 feet. With our tour guides at the helm, you will descend across its historic path and then take stairs down to a depth of 100 feet under lava into a world of volcanic wonders and ice. It is well-lit with LED lighting so you can see all the amazing formations in the cave.

Earth’s Underground “Refrigerator”

One of the ice cave's most unusual yet awesome features is it is a natural refrigerator. It works on an expansion and compression of its airflow, which is the same principle we use in modern refrigeration.

The cave can create a living glacier in a lava desert. Its ice block is about 1,000 feet long and varies from 8 to 30 feet in depth. No matter how hot it is outside, the temperature drops as soon as you enter the cave. Temperatures vary from about 23 to 29 degrees all year round.

Enjoy Our Recreational Area

Once you’re done with the tour, you may want to take some time to browse and buy some souvenirs from our on-site gift shop. We also have various rocks for sale outside. Friends and families can also roam around our rock and artifact museum or enjoy some refreshments at the picnic area.

We also have statues for photo opportunities. You can take pictures with our statue of Chief Washakie, a notable chief of the Shoshone Tribe, while children can have one with the adorable green dinosaur, Dinney.
