The Shoshone Ice Caves are one of Idaho’s most unique and historically significant natural attractions, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience a naturally preserved underground ice system while learning about geology, regional history, and environmental stewardship. For generations, the caves have served as an educational and recreational destination for children, families, school groups, and tourists from across the state and beyond.
At present, the caves are temporarily closed due to the deterioration of the internal structural walkway that allows safe access through the cave. This elevated walkway—originally constructed decades ago—has reached the end of its usable life. Despite ongoing maintenance and partial repairs over the years, the structure is now beyond repair and must be fully replaced to meet modern safety standards and reopen to the public.
We are seeking monetary contributions to fund the complete renovation of this internal walkway, a critical infrastructure component that ensures visitor safety while preserving the cave’s delicate geological environment. The project includes engineering, materials, construction, and compliance with safety regulations, all of which are essential to responsibly reopening the caves.
Restoring the walkway will allow the Shoshone Ice Caves to resume guided tours that provide hands-on geological education, foster environmental awareness, and create meaningful learning experiences for school field trips, youth groups, and families. Additionally, reopening the caves supports local tourism, strengthens the regional economy, and preserves an irreplaceable piece of Idaho’s natural heritage for future generations.
Community and sponsor support will play a pivotal role in ensuring that the Shoshone Ice Caves remain accessible, educational, and enjoyable—not just for today’s visitors, but for children and families for decades to come.
